THE POWER GAUGE & MAX MODE
The King of Fighters 2002 returns to its roots of classic rules. The game is back to 3-against-3 battles, familiar characters return for a colossal dream match, and a massive overhaul over the King of Fighters '98 Advanced Gauge, which will be discussed further.
As the fighter performs Special moves, the POW Gauge builds up. Being hit by an opponent's attacks may also give you power at a minimal rate. Once the gauge is filled up, you gain a stock of power. For the cost of a stock, you can either use Super Special Moves, Guard Counters and Guard Cancels. The gauge is able to store up to 3 stocks at a time and increases as you lose your members, up to a maximum of 5 stocks. Take note that red-colored moves are cancelable into Super Special moves!
A returning feature is MAX Mode. When at least 1 stock is stored, pressing the BC buttons together will enable Max Mode for a duration of time (around 12 seconds) depicted by a depleting green bar. Normally, most special maneuvers like Guard Canceling and Quick Cancels cost a stock to use. At MAX Mode, these same techniques can be used only at a fractional cost to the timer. MAX Mode will slightly decrease your attack power but will also enable you to execute your character's hidden arsenal. Performing a Super Special Move costs 1 stock, but you can use one during MAX Mode without expending a stock. MAX Mode also unlocks your character's MAX Super Special Move, which requires another stock to be expended for sheer damage to the opponent! Note that MAX Mode ends immediately after a Super Special Move is performed.
Lastly, each character has one unique move called Hidden Super Special moves, indicated in gold letters in their movelists. In order to be used, the fighter must be in MAX Mode and his Life level remaining should be 25% and below. MAX Super Special moves vary greatly in damage range and effects, so be sure to discover the terminating effects of each one and see the screen flash blue as mayhem ensues! Like the other Super Special Moves, MAX Mode ends automatically after performing a Hidden Super Special move.
THE WIRE WHIP SYSTEM
Retained from the previous game is the Wire Whip System. Certain characters have Special moves that have the main feature of sending the victim flying against the side of the screen and boomerang towards the mercy of his attacker. Certain combinations can prove deadly at the hands of a master upon a successful Wire combo.
Special moves in italics bear the Counter Wire property. As the name implies, these moves will rebound your opponent against the wall only if the specified attack lands on a counter hit. As shown above, Kula's Counter Shell successfully counters Kim's Swooper Kick, sending him against the wall, giving Kula the opportunity to finish Kim with a Crow Bites move or a Diamond Edge Super Special move.
